FOR ACCURATE AIRBORNE NITROSAMINE MONITORING

Airborne nitrosamine monitoring is only useful if the results you get are accurate. Many collection methods introduce artifact formation, producing false positives from solid sorbents, or false negatives through sample loss in wet traps. Nitrosamines also degrade under UV light, creating further risk of unreliable data.

The ThermoSorb-N is built to eliminate these problems. Each cartridge contains an artifact trap with an amine-trapping agent and a nitrosation inhibitor, preventing in-situ nitrosamine formation during collection. The opaque plastic construction blocks UV degradation. Solid sorbent materials prevent sample loss over time and temperature. The result is a nitrosamine reading that accurately reflects actual airborne levels.

The ThermoSorb-N is built for:

  • Workplaces where workers may be exposed to airborne nitrosamines and personal monitoring is required
  • Industrial environments where N-nitroso compound concentrations need to be measured and documented
  • Health and safety teams that need reliable, reproducible data for compliance and reporting purposes
  • Labs running analysis with the Ellutia 800 Series TEA, where sample integrity from collection through to analysis matters

How it works

The ThermoSorb-N clips to a pocket or lapel and connects to a personal sampling pump. Air passes through the cartridge during the sampling period. The amine trap and nitrosation inhibitor prevent false readings forming during collection. Once sampling is complete, the end caps, stored on the cartridge itself so they are always to hand, are replaced, and the cartridge is sealed in its foil pouch for transport to the lab.

Analysis is straightforward. A solvent back-flushing technique elutes the sample, which is then run on a gas chromatograph connected to an Ellutia 800 Series TEA detector. Results are available in minutes. If you do not have a TEA in-house, Ellutia can analyse your samples for you. Contact info@ellutia.com to arrange analysis.

If unusually high concentrations of N-nitroso compounds are expected, a second cartridge can be attached piggyback style, with no additional hardware needed.

What makes the ThermoSorb-N different

When tested against activated charcoal, alumina, Florisil, silica gel, and Tenax GC sorbents, the ThermoSorb-N was the only solid sorbent to show zero detectable nitrosamine formation across all five target compounds. It also outperformed wet trap methods, which showed sample loss over both time and temperature. The ThermoSorb-N showed no sample loss under the same conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ThermoSorb-N used for? The ThermoSorb-N is used to collect airborne nitrosamines for personal and workplace monitoring. It is designed for environments where workers may be exposed to N-nitroso compounds, and where accurate, reliable sampling data is required for health, safety, and compliance purposes.

How does the ThermoSorb-N prevent false results? Each cartridge contains an artifact trap incorporating an amine-trapping agent and a nitrosation inhibitor. This prevents nitrogen oxides from reacting with amines during collection, which is the main cause of false positives with other solid sorbents. The opaque plastic construction prevents UV degradation, and solid sorbent materials prevent sample loss over time and temperature.

What sampling pump do I need? The ThermoSorb-N is designed for use with personal sampling pumps. The pump is not included in this pack. Contact info@ellutia.com if you need guidance on compatible pumps.

How is the sample analysed after collection? A solvent back-flushing technique is used to elute the collected sample. It is then analysed using a gas chromatograph connected to an Ellutia 800 Series TEA detector. Analysis takes minutes and can detect volatile N-nitroso compounds at part-per-billion levels.

Are the cartridges single use? Yes. Each ThermoSorb-N cartridge is designed for single use. A pack of 20 cartridges is supplied.

What industries use the ThermoSorb-N? The ThermoSorb-N is used across a range of industries where nitrosamine exposure is a concern, including rubber and chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food production, and any workplace where N-nitroso compounds may be present in the air.

Can a second cartridge be used for high concentration environments? Yes. Where unusually high concentrations of N-nitroso compounds are expected, a second cartridge can be attached to the sampling system in piggyback style, extending the effective sampling capacity without any additional equipment.

Where are ThermoSorb-N cartridges made? The ThermoSorb-N is designed and manufactured in the UK by Ellutia, based in Ely, Cambridgeshire.
